What is so great about Pixar?

Pixar Animation Studios is one of the most admired companies in the world, not only for their brilliant movies, but also for their corporate culture. One of my favorite Harvard Business Review articles I read in a class at Babson College - Managing People and Organizations- highlights how companies like Pixar use their built environment to foster their creative culture.

So, what lessons can we learn from them?

πŸ’‘ Centralized Collaboration Spaces: A central atrium encourages spontaneous interactions and collaborations, fostering a sense of community and breaking down silos.

πŸ’‘ Open and Flexible Workspaces: The office layout includes open workspaces and flexible areas that can be reconfigured. This openness promotes transparency, easy communication, and the sharing of ideas.

πŸ’‘ Personalization and Creativity: Employees and Teams are encouraged to personalize their workspaces, which adds to a creative atmosphere.

πŸ’‘ Integrated Art and Technology: The design includes art installations, sculptures, and murals created by employees, reinforcing the importance of creativity in the workplace.

πŸ’‘ Encouragement of Physical Activity: Amenities such as game rooms, theaters, cafes, and outdoor spaces provides employees with opportunities to relax and have informal meetings where employees can brainstorm and discuss ideas.

πŸ’‘ Symbolism and Storytelling: Strong branding serves as a constant reminder of the company’s mission and values.
